"COLD, SUBSERVIENT AND QUIET."

Are the ways in which Asian women are perceived in the corporate workplace. On one hand, we're told to speak up more at work, but the research shows us that when we do, we face negative consequences for breaking the stereotype.

How then, do we navigate this gendered and cultural expectation?

VI-AN LE NGUYEN,
REGISTERED PSYCHOLOGIST

"Hi there, I'm a psychologist focusing on the areas of women’s mental health and cross-cultural experiences. I previously worked in professional services in the area of organisational performance and leadership, having completed my Masters of organisational psychology.

I'll help us to create structure and systems to navigate this big discussion with ease."

ASAMI KOIKE,
FOUNDER OF SHAPES AND SOUNDS

"Hello, I founded Shapes and Sounds after working in the context of youth mental health and developmental trauma. It only took me five years to see that our current mental health system doesn't respond adequately to the needs of our Asian Australian community, which then compelled me to start this project.

I'm really interested in asking all the difficult questions so that we can slowly start to dismantle the status quo."

HERE ARE SOME NICE THINGS THAT PEOPLE HAVE BEEN SAYING ABOUT SHAPES & SOUNDS:

LJ

"I first found Shapes and Sounds through Instagram when I stumbled across a post about Internalised racism. Asami’s blog post was so beautifully expressed and named what I’d been grappling with for so many years. I felt seen and understood for the first time in a long time and I felt calmer and clearer about myself the more I read. Asami has that incredible ability to put in to words, complex and nuanced themes and also make it informative and supportive.

As a biracial Asian person born in England who moved to Australia 16 years ago in my 20’s I’ve often felt a bit lost identity wise. I’d been searching for a way to explore the nuanced themes of growing up diaspora and with more than 1 culture. In Shapes and Sounds, I’ve found that welcoming space, the place to share and express those complexities that are unique to growing up Asian in Australia and looking after our mental health. It’s such a joy to feel supported and connected."

WILL

"I was drawn to Shapes and Sounds early in 2020 and was immediately drawn to their content, which I always find is informative, insightful and resonates with me on a personal level. It has been such a joy to connect with others with similar lived experiences and be part of a growing online community where I always feel seen, heard and a sense of belonging.

It has also been a pleasure getting to know Asami over this time and to witness her warm, passionate and caring nature. I am always in awe of her ability to hold space with such grace and to articulate and organise complex ideas and thoughts into digestible, coherent language and concepts. I feel so fortunate to have found this community and am so grateful for all the hard work and commitment Asami has dedicated to creating a place to share, connect and build community. Thank you."
